Rev. Dr. Jill Edens

Rev. Richard Edens

Rev. Dr. Jill Edens and Rev. Richard Edens retired in 2017 after serving the United Church of Chapel Hill for 38 years.  Jill grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and Richard in Charlotte, North Carolina.  They met and married at Yale Divinity School.  They retired to the Boston area to be closer to their daughter and her family.  In preparation for their retirement, they became involved in the study of leadership transitions which in turn prepared them for their current calling of serving churches in transition.
While an interim ministry with First Parish of Westwood in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic has been challenging, the congregation has been welcoming, engaging and undeterred in moving forward with their life and work.

This fall and winter First Parish has

  • Partnered with City Mission to receive winter coats for distribution to children in the Boston area through “Coat Boston.”

  • Invited churches in the greater Boston area to join them in commemorating those who have been lost to Covid-19 by ringing church bells over a period of 10 days.

  • hosted a socially distanced and safe Christmas holiday fair.

  • provided Christmas for four families connected with the local LifeWork (ARC) facility.

  • voted to become an Open & Affirming congregation.

  • moved forward with the work of the pastoral transition

  • convened a search committee.

Thanks to the work of dedicated volunteers and the First Parish staff, we worship together on-line and care for one another.  With the promise of vaccines in the spring, we look forward to meeting in-person this creative and resourceful congregation.
