Third Grade Communion Class at First Parish

Each year, our third graders – and any older children who have yet to take the class and would like to – participate in a 6-week Communion study class, ably led by teacher Jeannie Germano.  Using a UCC curriculum called “The Gifts of God for the Children of God”, the children study deepen their knowledge of the life of Jesus and his disciples, as well as the meaning and symbols of the Rite of Holy Communion.

At the end of the six week period, the third graders help the ushers prepare for communion, participate in the worship service, and complete their journey by taking communion for the first time with their parents.  During Coffee Hour after the service, each student assumes the role of one of the disciples and, in costume, shares what he or she has learned.  And, of course, we celebrate – with a big cake congratulating each member of the class for a job well done!

Communion class is always a valuable and meaningful experience, for both students and teacher.  If you have questions about the program, please contact our Director of Christian Education, Donna Bertazzoni.
